Drywall Textures

Drywall textures are a great way to add some personality to your walls. Choose the right texture that matches your home or choose a variety of textures for each room to create a uniqueness to each room of your home.

Smooth Skip Trowel

This pattern is created by using a skip trowel to apply the mud thinly across the drywall by hand. Where traditional skip trowel texture generally uses a 18 inch knife to glide across the drywall surface at an angle causing the mud to “skip” across the texture to create beautiful texture. With smooth skip trowel the process is the same but by flattening the knife to create a smooth texture to the design.

Knockdown

Knockdown texture is by far the most common. What’s not to love? It gives your walls some appeal and warmth and adds a bit of texture for dampening sound. This texture is created by using the same process to create a orange peel texture but prior to the wall drying, use a finishing knife to flatten the mud bumps and smooth them out to create a highly contemporary wall texture

Orange Peel

This texture got its name from its obvious appearance of looking like the surface of an orange peel. it’s another very popular drywall texture that will take a few extra steps to prepare before applying any texturing. You’ll need to sand, clean, and prime the walls first before you begin. After then, the “mud” needs to be water to a thick consistency and sprayed onto the walls with a compressor and then rolled over with a very thick nap roller. After the first coast is dried, apply a second coat.

Popcorn

Typically we see popcorn texture done on ceilings because it’s perfect for covering up minor drywall flaws that would otherwise be costly to repair and still leave with the clean finish. It’s also referred to as the cottage cheese texture because of its bumpy appearance. One other benefit of this texture is its ability to dampen sound because of the thick application that is required. This was a very popular style in the 60s and leading into the 80s. If you’re wanting to give your home or a room a throwback retro look and feel then this would be the perfect drywall texture for you.

Smooth Wall

There are 5 levels of drywall finishes that require the use of joint compound and sanding. The lower the level, the less “smooth” the surface of the wall is. Drywall finishing level 5 requires a skim coating of joint compound across the drywall. In most cases, a level 5 finish is not necessary and wouldn’t be cost effective to do a complete drywall project that way. Level 5 is like icing on the cake and should be discussed if necessary.
